Quick price guide, installed

What moves the price

Four things change a hot water bill: the system type, the size (a 250L tank for a family costs more than a 125L for a couple), whether the new system matches the old connections, and access. A straight swap on an easy-access tank is the cheap end. Changing fuel type, relocating the unit, or upgrading the electrical circuit or gas line adds to it. After-hours emergency work costs more than a booked job, so if you have some hot water left, booking tomorrow morning beats paying tonight's rate.

The rebate question

Heat pump hot water attracts government incentives under energy-saving schemes, and they genuinely change the maths: a system with a large sticker price can land much closer to a conventional replacement once incentives are applied. The catch is that the incentive amounts move with the market and the installer claims them for you, so the only number that matters is the net installed price on your quote. Ask for it in writing, and ask what brand and model the price is based on.

Repair or replace, by the numbers

Spending $400 repairing a 4-year-old system is good money. Spending $400 on a 12-year-old tank that will leak within a year or two is not. The plumbers we work with will tell you the age and condition of your system and give you both numbers, the repair and the replacement, so you can make the call yourself.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a replacement take?

A like-for-like swap is usually done in two to four hours once the plumber has the system on the truck. Same-day replacement is realistic for common sizes if you get in early in the day.

Is it illegal to install my own hot water system?

In NSW, yes. Hot water installation is licensed plumbing work, gas systems need a licensed gas fitter, and hard-wired electric connections need a licensed electrician. DIY installation can also void insurance and warranty.

What size tank do I need?

As a rough rule: 125L to 160L suits one to two people, 250L suits three to four, and 315L suits larger households. Continuous flow systems are sized by flow rate instead, usually 20 to 26 litres per minute for a family home.
